It introduces the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport's plan to develop technologies responding to the Fourth Industrial Revolution, such as smart construction automation, by 2025, and points out problems in Korea's construction industry, including a bidding system for construction contracts that is driven by price rather than by technological differentiation.

스마트 건설자동화 기술은 현장에서의 정밀 시공을 가능케 함과 동시에 사고의 발생가능성을 낮출 수 있어 많은 기대감을 형성하고 있다. 입체 3차원 설계기술인 BIM을 활용한 가상 시공 기술, 3D 프린터를 활용한 건설 부자재의 모듈화, 인공지능을 탑재한 로봇의 조립과 시공 등 그 가능성은 무궁무진하다. 특히 BIM(Building Information Modeling) 기술은 건축물 정보 모델링을 3차원 방식으로 적용하는 것으로 시공이 어렵거나 사고 위험성이 높은 건축물을 가상의 공간에서 설계해 본 뒤에 시공할 수 있는 장점이 있다.
동대문디자인플라자(DDP) 역시 BIM 기술을 이용한 건축물 중 하나이며, 주로 기형적인 건축물의 건축에 주로 활용되는 것을 알 수 있다. 특이한 형태의 건축물은 도시의 랜드마크로 기능할 수 있기 때문에 이러한 목적을 가지고 건축될 수 있으나, 도시의 규모가 커질수록 비정형의 건축물은 늘어날 가능성이 높다.
기존의 설계도면을 활용한 방식은 안정적인 구조 설계에 한계를 가질 수밖에 없는데 이러한 문제점을 BIM 기술이 보완할 수 있다. 뿐만 아니라 설계 과정에서 발생할 수 있는 잘못된 부분을 사전에 수정할 수 있고 시공기간과 비용을 단축할 수 있는 부가적인 효과도 가져온다.
