A report that picks a hugely popular restaurant near the author's home that never runs short of customers and analyzes its success factors in detail from the perspective of traditional feng shui. The case is Nangman Dakgomtang, a chicken restaurant in Baegun-dong, Nam-gu, Gwangju. The opening section, linked to the restaurant's signature dish of oyster bossam, first explains that oysters are a representative restorative winter food, that they are rich in minerals such as zinc, iron and calcium as well as vitamins and are low in calories and good for dieting, but that when eaten raw one should beware of norovirus and avoid them during the summer spawning season.
The overview explains that the restaurant is open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m., accepts groups and takeout, and is always so busy in the evening that customers must take a number and wait. It also notes that there is no dedicated parking so public transportation is recommended, that the interior is not large but cozy and the owner's mother prepares the food herself, and summarizes visitor reviews praising the fresh oysters and tender bossam pork, the spicy and tangy whelk salad, and the rich broth of the braised spicy chicken.
The feng shui analysis quotes the traditional idea that both graves and house sites must be auspicious for descendants to prosper, then goes through four conditions in turn. First, the restaurant sits on a gentle downhill slope, so the flow of energy is natural and stable, and terrain that is not too steep is considered good for business prosperity and financial luck. Second, it is located on a busy street with heavy foot traffic, interpreted as lively energy flowing in.
Third, the shop front is wide open toward an intersection with an unobstructed view, a position where energy from several directions gathers. Fourth, the surrounding terrain combines mountains and water in the 'mountain behind, water in front' pattern, giving a sense of stability and abundance. In the author's reflections, she says this analysis taught her that feng shui is not mere superstition but can serve as a standard for gauging sites where business thrives, and concludes that the restaurant's success cannot be explained by the taste and quality of its food alone but results from the flow of energy described by feng shui meshing with the actual characteristics of the commercial area.
Along with the reflection that she was reminded how important location is when starting a business or choosing a home, the references list two papers on modern reinterpretations of feng shui research, map searches and hashtag sources. Whenever I pass a shop with a long line out front, I wonder what draws customers besides the taste, and to me this report was an attempt to answer that question through the unfamiliar lens of feng shui.
The four conditions (a gentle downhill slope, a busy street where people gather, a front open toward an intersection, and terrain wrapped by mountains and water) are written in the language of feng shui, but examined one by one they closely resemble criteria used in commercial area analysis today, such as accessibility, visibility and foot traffic. I found especially interesting the passage that describes the front open to the intersection as a spot where energy from several directions gathers.
Feng shui speaks of it as a flow of energy, but in practice it also means a location where people coming from several streets see the shop sign first, so it felt like old wisdom and modern location theory were describing the same phenomenon in different words. This passage prompted me to look again at where the neighborhood shops I often visit are located, and I found, surprisingly, that the busy ones occupy similar spots.
When you use it, though, I recommend refining a few things. The information on oyster nutrition in the opening is far from the topic of the analysis, so it is better to shorten it, and naming the mountain and river that justify calling the site 'mountain behind, water in front', with a map, would make it more convincing. Also, rather than attributing every success factor to feng shui, setting it alongside factors such as taste, price and word of mouth and distinguishing what feng shui explains would make for a much more balanced analysis.

Pungsu-jiri (feng shui) comes from jangpung-deuksu, 'storing the wind and obtaining water', and is a traditional theory of site selection that seeks places where the land's vital energy gathers. Sites are examined through methods such as reading the flow of the mountains (ganryong), the surrounding mountain forms (jangpung) and the watercourses (deuksu).
Baesan-imsu (mountain behind, water in front) describes terrain with a mountain at the back and water in front. Because it blocks cold winter winds, gets plenty of sunlight and gives easy access to water, it was long regarded as the most ideal site for traditional Korean villages and houses.
Feng shui is divided into eumtaek feng shui, which deals with sites for the dead, and yangtaek feng shui, which deals with houses, villages and buildings where the living reside. Analyzing the location of a shop or restaurant today is an example of applying yangtaek feng shui to modern life.
Commercial area analysis today closely examines foot traffic, accessibility, visibility, nearby competitors and the size of surrounding residential areas as its main criteria. What feng shui calls an open front and a place where people gather overlaps naturally with visibility and foot traffic among these.
In assignments on feng shui, it is advisable to present feng shui explanations together with objective data. Adding evidence such as maps and photos, slope and road layout turns a feng shui interpretation into analysis rather than a mere impression.
